Erden must look for work abroad because his own region in Kosovo has nothing to offer him anymore. Before leaving he makes a last hike into the mountains where he grew up. Feelings of love and bitterness for a forgotten corner of Kosovo.

Who has ever heard of the Gorani? These people live in the far South West of Kosovo. They speak their own language and belief their roots lie in Bulgaria. Long ago they left from there to settle down in the mountainous border region between Albania and Macedonia. Gorani live in remote villages like Brod.

There are no jobs in Brod. That’s why most men work abroad for ten months a year. Italy is very popular. Also cheery and friendly Erden went there many times. This year he couldn't get the necessary papers so he will go to Bar in Montenegro. Without the money he brings back his family wont be able to survive the long and bleak winter.

Erden explains in broken Italian how hopeless life is in Brod. At the same time he cannot feel anything but love for the village and the mountains he grew up in. This barren mountain region he understands better than anyone else. The world isn’t always beautiful and nicely polished. Certainly not for the Gorani in Kosovo!

Not only Gorani are forced to earn money abroad. Many Europeans share the same faith. How can you still love your own region if you actually have a very hard time surviving there? This is the main question in a documentary about daily struggle and balancing between hope and despair. But also about living in the midst of magnificent nature, tending sheep on remote mountain passes and about picking the most delicious berries there are; berries from Brod!
